More Than This by Patrick Ness

Challenge 17 ~ “A book a friend recommended.”

I was really impressed with this book. I have never been a fan of Patrick Ness before (I struggled greatly to get into The Knife of Never Letting Go, and I thought The Monster Calls was a bit too heavy for its marketed audience), but More Than This was an absolute pleasure to read. And as someone who is eagerly awaiting the release of ‘The Rest of Us Just Live Here’, I am relieved – maybe young adult read set on Earth (well, sort of) are more his scene…

The novel opened and from the first page the reader was intrigued. It begins with a ‘just a few more pages’ and before you know it, you find that you’re hooked. Ness managed to perfect the art of curiosity – leaving so many questions unanswered, but providing sufficient to keep the reader pacified. Chapter after chapter the revelations seemed to unearth yet more questions, and this helped the pages to spin by.

The suspense was perfectly complimented by a range of literary skills – the writing was of a stellar quality and the plot an unusual and thought-provoking one. Each of the characters was well-considered, effective and developed in a believable fashion. The two worlds Ness presented blended harmoniously, so that in reading one you regularly forgot about the other (conveniently tying quite well into the concept of the book itself!)

Overall it was a truly stunning read (dare I say the best I’ve read this year?) that I would recommend to everyone. Literally everyone. It has something to offer us all, whether that be adrenaline, answers or an offbeat solution that there truly is more than this…

(Particularly) Recommended for fans of:

  •  The Maze Runner Trilogy by James Dashner
  •  The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
  •  The Power of Five Series by Anthony Horowitz
