I Stop Somewhere by T. E. Carter

Challenge #41 ~ “A mystery.”

My opinion in three sentences:

Carter’s tale is a powerful one, albeit heavy, serious and a touch dark. Things certainly take a while to establish into a steady plot (or approximation of one, at least), and whilst things weren’t necessarily unpredictable, it was well thought out and steadily paced. I was a particular fan of the angle taken from which to tell the story, although at times it could have been better used to advance the plot or shape the characters rather than dwell heavily on just the police investigation.

(Without spoiling anything) the best bit:

Carter’s writing was lyrical and I really grew to enjoy the style used. Not only was the slightly unusual POV a win, but the actual craftmanship that went into the descriptions and expressions. It is rare for an author to really encapsulate perfectly an idea or sentiment that is difficult to explain in words, but Carter succeeds on numerous occasions, and is a reason alone to try this book.

A warning for the book:

It’s a very serious, dark and heavy read. Before reading, definitely seek out the trigger warnings if necessary, because whilst things aren’t graphic at all, there’s some substantial discussion and dissection of the themes. Light relief on hand or available post-reading is probably a good call too.
