My opinion in three sentences:

Did you ever have a teacher talk about the adjective “nice” and how lukewarm or like weak tea it is? Maybe that’s only a thing in England, but the point stands in that it is a valid word but actually expresses very little sentiment or strength of feeling because (a) it’s overused (or used to be in primary school) and (b) is up against a field of other adjectives with much stronger definitions or connotations. Maybe that helps provide some context when I say that this book was nice – the character were nice, the plot was nice and the writing was nice – but beyond that, there’s not too much else I can say.

(Without spoiling anything) the best bit:

There’s nothing actively wrong with this book – and, yes, sometimes it is good to give thanks for that because there so often is. That being said, it’s probably pretty evident therefore that there was nothing that particularly stood out from anything else, or that this book didn’t set the world on fire. But should that be a critique, really, because we need these kinds of books, too.

A warning for the book:

The tone and content didn’t quite match up. It was as if the book was undecided on what kind of age range to target and so tried to cover too many bases at once. The characters and the storyline tended more towards young adult, in my opinion, whilst the tone felt a little juvenile and more like a middle grade read. It didn’t spoil the book (and I’m still planning on seeking out the sequel), but it was definitely noticeable throughout.
