Sadie by Courtney Summers

Challenge #16 ~ “A book told from multiple perspectives.”

sadie

My opinion in three sentences:

Either I have a hidden talent for picking phenomenal audiobooks, or audiobooks are a media I should get more into – Sadie really came to life as an audiobook, aided by the fact that one of the perspectives was written as a radio documentary, as so I would 100% recommend this version to everyone. The story was well-researched, well-written and handled with professional tact throughout. Throw in some strong characters with their own unique voices and you have the recipe for success Summers presents in this gritty tale.

(Without spoiling anything) the best bit:

Summers knew what she was doing with the ending. There is so much good about the book, but the ending concreted my faith in the book as a whole. It didn’t go for the easy or predictable, instead remaining true to the characters, nature of the themes and remaining realistic to the bitter end. There’s nothing worse than a truly enjoyable read that spoils things by concluding in the way they think the reader wants it to – Summers avoids this pitfall, and Sadie is all the better for it.

A warning for the book:

I struggled a little towards the middle. Looking back, I can see why certain sections were necessary plot-wise and in character development, but at the same time, there was something about them (or the way they were presented) that I had to really grapple with and found a little sludgy. If you have the same problem, keep going – it honestly is worth it!
